Water and Livelihoods Foundation (WLF) is an NGO based in Hyderabad, India. WLF strives towards achieving water security and livelihoods enhancement of poor through community development initiatives, action research & innovations and skill development.

Applications of Geographical Information System (GIS) in water resources systems analysis and flood modelling is one of the core areas of its expertise. WLF offers unique blend of expertise on applications of spatial analysis capabilities of GIS to water resources domain.

This short skill development course meets the growing need for digital mapping skills among NGO staff and rural development workers. This practice-oriented course covers the following aspects:

  1. Introduction to Geographical Information System (GIS) and data capturing using Global Positioning System (GPS) tools
  2. Basic operations of open source QGIS software
  3. Digitizing paper maps, SoI topo sheets and from Google Earth
  4. Steps in developing a thematic water map for a given area

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to develop digital maps, such as, resource maps, contour maps, land-use, forest, spatial trends of health, education facilities and watershed boundary maps using QGIS.
